Legal English Teacher

Michael (Mike) McArthur is an experienced legal educator dedicated to helping international scholars excel in legal communication and academic publishing. With a J.D. from the University of Nebraska College of Law, an M.L.I.S. from the University of Washington, and a B.A. in Japanese from Brigham Young University, his academic background bridges law, research, and global perspectives.

Mike worked at the University of Michigan Law School for several years before joining Duke University School of Law where he has been a lecturing fellow for over seven years. At Duke he teaches in the first-year Legal Research and Writing program and leads the research instruction for LLM students. His other classes include Research Methods in Foreign, Comparative, and International Law and AI and Legal Research. His expertise extends to strategies for publishing in U.S. law reviews, legal citation standards, and legal research methodologies, having presented all around the world on such topics, making him a trusted mentor for scholars navigating these complex fields.

Beyond the classroom, Mike is a member of the Washington State Bar and has served in meaningful roles in various legal research organizations, including the International Association of Law Libraries (IALL), American Society of International Law (ASIL), and the American Association of Law Libraries (AALL).

With years of experience guiding scholars through U.S. legal academia, Mike founded Scholarly Compass to provide international legal professionals with expert coaching and strategic insights for mastering legal English and achieving law review publication success.
